5 Christian Books For Intentional Parents

As a mother of very young children, I have begun to implement new routines and rhythms throughout our day to create structure for them. It is my number one priority to raise them in a loving, Christian home that is safe and immersed in God’s Word.

Let’s take a look at some of the books I’ve been reading! – Note: I have included Amazon links to all of these books. As stated in the disclaimer above, as an Amazon Affiliate I may receive compensation for any links you click.

Disclaimer: I have not completed all of these books yet. All of these books came highly recommended by others. My sharing of these books does not mean I endorse the authors, their beliefs, or everything mentioned in the books.

1. Mama Bear Apologetics by Hillary Morgan Ferrer

This book is actually written by a group of mothers, part of the Mama Bear Apologetics organization. While I’m not a huge fan of the aggressive tone throughout, I do understand the sentiments. It’s a harsh world out there, and our children are constantly assaulted by all sorts of new concepts and philosophies.

Mama Bear Apologetics provides insight into all the different “isms” out there right now (Postmodernism, Materialism, and Naturalism, just to name a few), as well as discussion prompts to have with other parents and children. Of course, by the time my kids are older, the world may be completely different and there will have to be a new edition of this book written! Haha. But really, it does a great job of addressing phenomenons that have been popular for years and our kids are likely to encounter as well.

There is a second book written as well that focuses on the topic of sexuality. I have a copy, but haven’t started it yet!

2. M is for Mama by Abbie Halberstadt

I heard a lot about this book, but when I picked it up to skim a few pages at the bookstore, it rubbed me the wrong way. Not sure why. After waiting a few months, I revisited it again and decided to buy it. This time, it didn’t bother me. Perhaps being slightly further into my motherhood journey was enough to get me to relate to the book lol. It has been very inspiring for many moms, encouraging them not to fall into what our culture says motherhood should be. See the author’s website for more info here.

3. Habits of the Household by Justin Whitmel Earley

This book is all about forming good, faith-based habits within your family. It is written in such a way that you can pick it up and read what you need to, and skip what you don’t. There are helpful charts and tables to organize points as well, which is great for busy parents who don’t get much time to sit down and read!

4. Heartfelt Discipline by Clay Clarkson

This book is popular within the Gentle/Positive/Respectful parenting movement. There is controversy among Christian circles as to whether the Gentle Parenting Movement is Biblical, but there are still good points to learn from this, and it’s written from a Christian perspective. It separates “punishment” from “discipline”, since discipline and discipleship are huge points in the Christian faith.

5. The Bible

The guideline for all of our actions and beliefs should of course be the Bible itself. A Christian parent cannot disciple children without the guidance of God’s Word. While all Christians have their preferences for translation, so long as the translation is accurate, whatever translation helps you understand best will work.

My favorite Bibles are the Crossway ESV Single-Column Journaling Bible and the She Reads Truth CSB Bible. The ESV is beautifully translated and this particular copy has a nice font, off-white pages that are easy on the eyes, and plenty of space to take notes. The CSB provides clear language that is easy to understand, and this copy has sleek white pages, an easy-to-read font, and devotionals sprinkled throughout.

It’s often said that parenting doesn’t come with an instruction manual. I would argue that the Bible is our instruction manual for all aspects of life, but sometimes it’s hard to see how many parts of it apply in our modern lives. God’s Word is always fit for all people, but having books written by experts can help us understand a little better and give us a starting point for further study. My suggestion is that you always pray for discernment, study your Bible first and foremost, and take from these books what you will. I pray you learn great things that benefit your whole family!

God bless and happy reading,
